Brooks Urquhart led the Georgia Junior Golf Championship on day one of the tournament, which began on Monday, July 6. Today, he wrapped it up with a final round of 68 to win by four strokes. There are some professionals on the PGA Tour that would love a finish like that of the 17-year-old golfer from Columbus.
Tip of the hat to Harrison Bridges from Columbus who tied for 38th, Monty Thakur, who tied for 58th, and 16-year-old Sam Sillitto, who didn’t make the cut.
The win is a big deal for Brooks and his family. His dad, Michael, who has been instrumental in starting a local Junior Golf Association in Columbus, is ecstatic.
“Brooks has worked so hard. His win is surreal and I am so proud of him,” said Michael. “His love of golf started from an early age.”
Brooks has been playing golf ever since he could walk. He went with his dad to play while swinging a plastic golf club.
He played golf at Columbus High School (CHS) for about two and a half years. It was great training. According to CHS Golf Coach Chris Parker, “The school has won more state championships in golf than baseball.”
Then Brooks dropped out of CHS to be home schooled. His love of golf continued. His winning ways may just be beginning.
Today, Brooks Urquhart has set himself up to continue the rich history of golf in Columbus, Georgia. His predecessors, including 1987 Masters winner Larry Mize and the #5 ranking World Golfer Russell Henley would be proud.
