ATHENS, Ga. — Authorities have identified the inmate found unresponsive earlier this week at the Athens-Clarke County Jail.
The deceased has been identified as 45-year-old Joshua Ray Silvers of Statham, according to an updated release from the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office.
As previously reported, jail staff discovered Silvers unresponsive in his cell around 7:03 p.m. on April 5 while delivering a change of uniform. A deputy entered the cell and found him seated and slumped over, unresponsive to verbal or physical stimulation.
Lifesaving procedures were immediately initiated, and on-site medical personnel were called. Emergency Medical Services and Athens-Clarke County Fire Department personnel also responded, but were unable to revive him. The Athens-Clarke County coroner later pronounced Silvers dead at the scene.
Officials said multiple attempts were made to locate and notify next of kin before his mother was informed.
The incident remains under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, as is standard protocol for in-custody deaths.
No further information has been released.
