Massive fire engulfs historic Rome courthouse

ROME, Ga. — A massive fire sent thick black smoke billowing over downtown Rome Monday afternoon, forcing the evacuation of the historic Floyd County Courthouse and nearby streets.

The fire was reported around 2:20 p.m. inside the courthouse, where crews were already working on renovations. Within minutes, flames could be seen shooting from parts of the building as heavy smoke spread across the skyline.

All employees inside were safely evacuated, according to Floyd County Manager Jamie McCord.

Firefighters with the Rome-Floyd County Fire Department rushed to the scene and continue working to contain the blaze. Authorities shut down roads across the downtown area, and police began evacuating portions of Broad Street as a precaution.

Images and video circulating online show large flames and dark smoke pouring from the historic structure, drawing crowds and widespread attention across social media.

Officials said the courthouse was undergoing renovations at the time of the fire. The cause remains unknown and is under investigation.
