JASPER, Ga. — A Veterans Affairs employee injured in Tuesday’s shooting at a North Georgia clinic has died, authorities confirmed.
Nicholas “Nic” Crews, 34, of Marietta, died Wednesday, March 18, after being airlifted to a trauma hospital following the attack at the Veterans Affairs Clinic in Jaspar, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Investigators say Crews, a social work case manager, was shot around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, while working inside the clinic. The suspected gunman, Lawrence Charles Michels, 51, of Jasper, had arrived for a walk-in mental health consultation when he opened fire.
Authorities previously reported that Michels was shot and killed after exchanging gunfire with police officers and an armed civilian outside the clinic. No officers were injured.
The GBI said both Crews and Michels will undergo autopsies at the state crime lab.
The investigation remains active and ongoing. Once complete, the case will be turned over to the Appalachian Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
The shooting prompted the closure of the VA clinic for the remainder of the week as officials worked to support staff and patients in the aftermath.
