With dozens of roads still iced over in Habersham, county school officials made the call mid-Thursday to cancel class for a fifth straight day.

Students will not report to class on Friday, Jan. 29, but staff are to report to work at 8:30 a.m. or when safe to do so.

“We still have 25-30 roads that are unsafe for travel due to icy sections, trees hanging over the roadways, and low-hanging lines. Our transportation department does not feel safe placing school buses and student drivers on our roadways,” said Habersham County School Superintendent Patrick Franklin.

Franklin said teachers and staff will focus on lesson planning and preparation for the next storm, which is expected to arrive on Saturday. He said parents will have the opportunity to pick up materials (lessons, library books, etc.) on Friday. Schools will communicate the details.
