CLARKESVILLE, Ga. – A large gas leak on Sunday forced temporary road closures west of Clarkesville.

Officials say a tree fell on a gas meter during the afternoon, breaking a service line from the 6-inch main. The leak forced the temporary closure near the intersection of Highways 17 and 115 at Habersham Mills Road. The road reopened just after 5 p.m. Sunday.

Those in the area reported a loud, audible squealing sound from the damaged line, along with a strong gas odor in the area. Due to the severity of the leak, Atlanta Gas Light was contacted to secure the line and begin mitigation.
