CORNELIA, Ga. — Six people safely escaped a house fire Friday night on Copperhead Road, but the family lost two dogs in the blaze, according to fire officials.
The fire was reported around 9:30 p.m. on March 27 in the 600 block of Copperhead Road, prompting a multi-agency response from Habersham County, Baldwin, and Cornelia fire departments.
When crews arrived, they found a fully involved fire on the back porch that had already spread into the home’s attic.

Firefighters made entry and quickly contained the blaze, preventing further damage to the structure. Crews remained on scene into the early morning hours, conducting overhaul operations and checking for any hidden fire.
Officials said four residents and two visitors were inside the home at the time of the fire. A smoke alarm alerted the occupants, who discovered the fire on the porch and evacuated safely.

No injuries to residents or responders were reported. However, two dogs inside the home did not survive. Firefighters were able to recover the animals and return them to the family.
The American Red Cross offered assistance to the displaced residents, but the family declined and is staying with relatives.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office and local authorities.
