DAWSON COUNTY, Ga. — Two people were rescued from the water after a pontoon boat was damaged by a large wake on Lake Lanier Friday night.
The incident happened around 10 p.m. on July 3 near the Athens Boat Club following a fireworks show.
According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, game wardens arrived to find two people in the water surrounded by debris in an area crowded with boats leaving the celebration. Wardens immediately pulled the pair from the water while other officers checked on the remaining passengers aboard the pontoon.
The boaters told investigators a large wake came over the bow of the boat, breaking the starboard bow seat compartment and damaging the paneling. Despite the damage and the two occupants ending up in the water, no injuries were reported.
Officials determined alcohol was not a factor in the incident.
At least two people have died and three others have been injured in incidents across Georgia during the long Fourth of July holiday weekend.
