The weird, wacky, wild, and wonderful parade returns to Uptown Columbus, Saturday, May 2. You never know who or what will show up, because Strut the Hooch is a celebration like no other. Pets dressed as people, people dressed as pets, stilt walkers, musicians, mascots, Superheroes and more. They are all anxious to entertain and walk, sing, dance, and perform their way along the parade route.
The one face missing this year is that of Steve Scott, Captain Hooch. He started it all in 2015 and built the event over the years as a way to celebrate local artists and musicians, foster a sense of community, and bring attention to Uptown Columbus.
He was as diverse as Strut the Hooch had become. Steve retired after 28 years in the Navy as a captain long before he became Captain Hooch. He was also a retired educator, musician, artist, and master storyteller. His many friends described him as an asset to the community. Steve passed away shortly after last year’s Strut the Hooch.
“I will be wearing dad’s costume, including the hat, in this year’s parade because I want to help continue his tradition and to take his place in spirit,” said his son Stephen, who traveled from Washington State to participate.
His stepmom, Adleyn, and his sisters will be riding in the Grand Marshall’s car. Stephen says he will probably walk beside them.
“Dad had already decided last year to turn over the reins to the Tri City Latino Association for administrative duties and advertising. They’ve done a wonderful job,” said Stephen.
Crystal Johnston started helping with Strut the Hooch about three years ago by passing out flyers and hanging posters for advertising. She has also dressed up and taken part in the parade.
“I will continue to help with the parade because I want to see Steve’s weird, wacky, wonderful vision continue for years to come,” explained Crystal. “I only wish I had met him sooner.”
It has rained on the parade a couple of times in the past years, but now, rain is a blessing based on the drought. Be like Steve Scott, pop a multicolored umbrella, smile and wave, just as Steve Scott will be doing from Heaven. Don’t rain on his parade for the city he loved so much.
