People rescued from sinking boat on Lake Hartwell

HARTWELL, Ga. — Multiple agencies responded Sunday evening to a boating incident on Lake Hartwell after a vessel began taking on water and sinking with several people aboard.

According to the Hart County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched shortly after 7 p.m. on June 7 following reports that a boat was sinking on the lake.

Deputies and investigators responded by boat along with rangers from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Authorities located the vessel and made contact with its occupants. All individuals aboard were safely transported to a campground in South Carolina, where they had launched earlier in the day.

No injuries were reported.

The Hart County Sheriff’s Office thanked the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and other responding agencies for their assistance in bringing the incident to a safe conclusion.

Sheriff Chris Carroll said the coordinated response helped ensure all occupants were safely returned to shore.
