Habersham County to observe Solid Waste and Recycling Workers Week

CLARKESVILLE — Habersham County will recognize the employees of its Solid Waste Department during Solid Waste and Recycling Workers Week, which will be observed June 15-20.

County officials are encouraging residents to show appreciation for the workers who operate the county’s landfill and recycling centers, manage waste disposal and recycling programs, and help ensure environmental compliance throughout Habersham County.

According to the county, solid waste and recycling employees provide essential services that help protect public health, preserve natural resources and maintain the quality of life for residents. Their work often takes place behind the scenes and in all types of weather conditions.

“Solid Waste and Recycling Workers Week provides an opportunity to recognize the hardworking individuals who keep our communities clean and functioning every day,” Solid Waste Director Johnnie Vickers said in a statement. “Their dedication to environmental stewardship and customer service is a critical part of county operations, and we appreciate their commitment to serving the citizens of Habersham County.”

The county said Solid Waste Department employees are responsible for a range of services, including landfill operations, recycling programs, waste disposal and public education efforts aimed at promoting responsible waste management.

County officials also noted that solid waste collection and disposal remains one of the nation’s most hazardous professions. According to the Georgia chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America, solid waste workers rank among the 10 most dangerous occupations in the United States because of the risks they face while performing their duties.

Habersham County officials said the department has continued efforts to expand recycling opportunities, improve operational efficiency and promote environmental stewardship across the county.
