A former sheriff’s deputy shot himself after a hostage situation and standoff with law enforcement ended in Macon County, Alabama Tuesday night. The condition of the deputy is unknown.

WSFA reports the former deputy held a woman and her baby at gunpoint before law enforcement negotiated their release. The news outlet said Sheriff Andre Brunson arrived on scene and spoke to the former deputy at length during the harrowing ordeal. Once the hostage situation ended the former deputy then shot himself in the chest.

According to Sheriff Brunson the unnamed former deputy involved in the incident was charged with domestic violence and was fired from his position with the Macon County Sheriff’s Office as a result. The hostage was identified as the former deputy’s girlfriend.
