CANON, Ga. — A man accused of aggravated assault is in custody after surrendering to law enforcement following a five-hour standoff in Franklin County.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said J. Scott Michaels surrendered to the Georgia State Patrol SWAT Team without further incident. No injuries were reported.
Authorities were initially dispatched to Burroughs Road in Canon on Sunday, April 12, in response to a domestic violence call. When deputies arrived, they learned Michaels had allegedly committed two counts of aggravated assault against a member of the household and was expressing “suicidal ideations,” the sheriff’s office said.
Negotiators worked with Michaels for several hours before he ultimately gave himself up peacefully.
Michaels has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault. Officials said additional charges are forthcoming.
The sheriff’s office credited multiple agencies for assisting during the incident, including the Hart County Sheriff’s Office, Lavonia Police Department, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Franklin County EMS, and local dispatchers.
The incident occurred just days after a fatal standoff in Lavonia left one man dead.
