ALTO, Ga. — The Alto Town Council approved an intergovernmental agreement Tuesday allowing the town to participate in Habersham County’s new emergency radio communications system, part of a countywide effort to upgrade communications for law enforcement, fire and emergency medical responders.
The agreement approved Tuesday concerns the town’s participation in the county’s new radio system, which is designed to improve coverage and interoperability among public safety agencies.
Alto joins county 911 system
Council members approved an intergovernmental agreement with Habersham County related to the county’s new 911 radio system.
The system is designed to improve radio coverage and communications among law enforcement, fire and emergency medical agencies throughout Habersham County. County officials have said the new system is expected to improve coverage and interoperability among emergency agencies.
Alto’s approval follows similar action by other municipalities and the Habersham County Board of Education as local agencies transition to the new communications system.
Council recognizes Recovery Month
The council also signed a proclamation designating September as National Recovery Month.
Representatives of Self-Discovery 24 Inc., including President Johnna Anderson, attended the meeting to discuss the organization’s work and promote the proclamation.
Self-Discovery 24’s mission is to empower people seeking recovery and help them identify their strengths through self-discovery so they can sustain long-term recovery and wellness from substance use disorder and mental health challenges. The organization provides peer-based support, resources and education and supports multiple pathways to recovery and wellness.
Anderson also promoted Self-Discovery 24’s upcoming 5th Annual Together We Recover and 2026 Bus Tour. The free event will be held at The Torch Greenspace, 800 Canon Bridge Road in Demorest, from 4 to 6 p.m. It will feature food, music, recovery resources and speakers.
Self-Discovery 24 operates a Habersham County location at 236 C Level Grove Road in Cornelia and offers recovery meetings and peer support services in the community.
GDOT road inventory updated
The council approved a resolution authorizing updates to Alto’s road inventory with GDOT.
Mayor Gail Armour explained during the work session that she had submitted updated information to GDOT regarding road mileage and surface types for several streets, including Windshell, Jennifer Lane and Gordon.
GDOT subsequently notified the town that about eight streets were not included in its records, Armour said. The resolution authorizes the town to submit the necessary documentation and meeting minutes to update the state’s records.
The council tabled an executive session regarding personnel.
